The History of the Cable Tie

Whether you call it a cable tie, wire tie, zip tie, tie wrap, heavy-duty zip tie, or metal cable tie, if you use them regularly (or even occasionally), you know just how essential they can be for organizing, bundling, securing, and making repairs to a variety of items at work and at home.

The cable tie didn’t exist until the middle of the 20^th century when it was invented by Maurus C. Logan, an employee of Thomas & Betts, an electrical company in New Jersey. He filed a patent in 1958, which was granted in 1961.

Cable ties were mainly used in the aircraft industry during the early years. They were used to secure wiring harnesses and cables in aircraft assemblies. They were a lightweight and efficient alternative to traditional methods like waxed twine or metal wire.

It wasn’t long before other industries started to see the many benefits of cable ties. The automotive, construction, electronics, and telecommunications industries were quick to buy in and reap the benefits of this quick, easy, inexpensive method.
